The opera:

The opera takes place during the Allied invasion of France in World War II.  Three U.S. soldiers have become separated from their unit during a huge battle. They take refuge in an abandoned farmhouse and discover a cache of hidden wine. The soldiers proceed to get drunk and to complain about their lot as soldiers. Finally, in a moment of drunken inspiration, they resolve to kill Death himself – thereby ending the war. They challenge Death to fight them - but the challenge is answered in a way that they do not expect.
